Wednesday: social for business

On Wednesday, I spent the day at work and the night at an event for my Internship.

I used:

  • Emails
  • Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook
  • ANZ GoMoneyAU
  • Uber
  • iMessage & Wattsapp
  • Google

At the event, my role was documenting what was happening via social media. I did this through two Instagram posts and Instagram stories. I also had to reply to any posts or stories where we were mentioned so that we were engaging with our audience.

I posted two Instagrams, one towards the start of the night and one towards the end. This created an introduction and conclusion to the event, which would also provide further context for the stories. To post an Instagram photo I took hundreds of images the company’s iPhone 7, filtered through them to find the ‘shot’, selected it on the app and adjusted the brightness and contrast to make it look more ‘insta ready’. I then added a caption, tagging the company’s we worked with – as you can see  below. I posted it, which made me the author and publisher of the work, even though it was distributed under the company’s Instagram. Therefore, they own it.
We used Instagram because we find that it is the best platform for our demographic: Females aged 25-50 y/o’s interested in fashion.

We hoped by uploading to our Instagram, potential business partners would see that we do events and thus would be great to collaborate with and potential students would perceive us as an education facility that provides great opportunities.

The more we post, we find that we increase our follower account. With that, means frequency and reach within our followers. You never know when a post will suddenly ‘hit’ a follower and cause action.

Tuesday: a bit of this, a bit of that

On Tuesday, I spent the day at my part time retail job at Sportsgirl. I was able to get home to do a little bit of studying and ended the night by going to the movies  with my friends.

I didn’t use many forms of online media. The ones I did use were:

  • Instagram, Snapchat & Facebook
  • Google docs
  • Lido Cinemas website
  • ANZ GoMoney AU
  • iMessage & WhatsApp
  • WordPress

Most of the online media I used on Tuesday were in relation to my social outing. I organised going to the movies on a group WhatApp. I asked if anyone wanted to see Beauty and The Beast since it had just come out. I had a few takers for the 6:30 session at Lido Cinemas in Hawthorn, so that was that.

I decided to book the tickets online since it was a Tuesday, therefore the tickets are cheaper and the film had only just come out. I thought it may have been a busy night.

To buy the tickets I took these steps:

  1. Went to the Lido Cinemas website
  2. Clicked on the link ‘buy tickets’, followed by ‘films + times’ link
  3. Scrolled down to find the session I wanted
  4. Selected 4 concession tickets
  5. Selected our seats
  6. Popped in my card details
  7. Got a confirmation email

Then, I simply messaged ‘done!’ to the group WhatsApp and all participants were ready to go.

Once we were at the cinema, I sent a quick ‘where are you guys at’ message in the WhatsApp to see how far away they were. This is because I don’t like being alone in public and the data usage on my phone was way over the limit – ah, the perks of being a part of the digital generation. Thankfully, they were there within minutes.

I walked up to the booth, showed the lady at the counter the tickets that were attached in the conformational email that was sent and we were off.

Online booking, making the cinema process extremely streamline.

Monday: study time

I spent Monday at home, dedicating my time to finishing an assignment.
I used the following media sources:

  • Looked at Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook throughout the day
  • Checked personal & student emails
  • Went on MyRMIT & blackboard
  • Google search
  • Used Google Scholar & RMIT University Library
  • iMessage & Whatsapp
  • Spotify

The assignment was for my class ‘New perspectives in popular culture’ and was an 1,000 word essay on the exploitation of fans by franchises.

I had already picked my focus: Hollywood film industry. To start work on the assessment I went to google, typed in a very broad term ‘film franchises exploit their fanbase’ and expected to get no results but I actually found some good links with useful information, including a case study – George Lucas and the Star Wars franchise.

I used the knowledge to search for information using the RMIT University Library database and Google Scholar, as my essay was not going seem well informed without scholarly or peer reviewed references. This was a process that took all day, as I had to search variations of phrases I thought would give me the information I needed, then look through the sources, then find something I could reference. Often I couldn’t find anything, so I had to do this process over and over again. Additionally, I kept writing paragraphs and finding out I needed more evidence to back up point.

I used the MyRMIT library search more than Google Scholar because I found it easier to use and I had more confidence in the sources. However, Google Scholar is a good platform to look up the reference you are using to see if/how many people have cited it and therefore get a better grasp of it’s a credible source or not.
It wasn’t due on Monday night so I didn’t submit it straight away. When I did, however, I went to the class’ blackboard portal on MyRMIT, clicked the assessments link which took me to turnitin which is where I uploaded and handed in my assessment. While I authored the essay, I did not publish or distribute it anywhere online, except the turnitin portal.

Sunday: a day of rest…and binging

This was the first Sunday I’d had off in months and I wanted to spend it doing the bare minimum.

These are the forms of online media I used:

  • Messaged friends on Whatsapp
  • Checked Instagram, Facebook and Snapchat reguraly
  • Went on the ANZ app ‘goMoney AU’ to check how much money I had spent the night before…it was much more than I had budgeted for
  • Posted a post for Saturday’s media usage on this blog
  • Watched the TV show Younger on Stan

The whole day I only authored watts app messages. I spent most of the day watching the TV show Younger on the streaming site Stan. I simply went on to the Stan website, logged on, selected the TV show and mindlessly watched. The show is about a 40 y/o woman who pretends to be a 26 y/o so she can get a job, and follows her as her lie spins out of control. The episodes are only 25 minutes, so it’s extremely easy to binge and I ended up watching all of season three.

I’m a pretty dedicated Netflix user, however my friend had recommended Younger to me which you can only watch on Stan. The site gifts new users to the first month free, so I signed up specifically to watch the show.

After I finished all the episodes that were available on Sunday night, I deleted my account so I didn’t have to pay for the service. It’s probably not healthy or cost efficient to be using two streaming services at the one time. I stuck with Netflix because I find it easier to use and I like the shows it offers more.

I spent the vast majority of the day watching the TV show because I have had an extremely busy few weeks and really wanted to chill out and not use any brain cells! I like watching Younger because you don’t have to think too much. It has the right amount of drama and comedy, without being too intense. I also like it because the episodes are shorter than most of the TV shows around these days, therefore you don’t have to sit down for a full 50 minutes each time you start an episode.

Saturday: social media frenzy

On Saturday the main form of online media I used was social media. I only used a few other forms of online media compared to most days as I was busier than usual. These were:

  • iMessage
  • Whatsapp
  • Uber
  • ANZ GoMoneyAU app

As usual, I regularly checked and scrolled through my Instagram, Facebook and Snapchat. I also uploaded a photo to Instagram and posted a few snapchat stories:

     

Instagram

The Instagram photo was made from scratch. I had a friend take a picture of my friend and I (as above) on my iPhone 6, edited the colouring on the editing app vscocam with the filter ‘C1’, saved the image to my camera roll, uploaded it to Instagram, tagged my friend Eilwen, threw a few emojis in as a caption and published it.

While I didn’t distribute the photo anywhere else I sent it to Eilwen through iMessage and she posted it on her own Facebook, making her a publisher.

With Instagram photos like this, the question that arises is:
Who is the author?

I edited and distributed the image, however, someone else took the photo. Does this make them the owner? Should they get credit? Something interesting that needs exploring further.

So, why did I post this photo? I like documenting memories and I think Instagram is a great place for me to look back and see my highlights reel. I like being able to post photos of my friends and know that friends and family can also see them.

In saying this, I am not immune to the high that instant gratification on Instagram gives you and the unhealthy need to show people you’re having fun. While I’m aware of this my use of social media will not change in the near future because of the above reason.

Snapchat 

To upload the snapchat stories the process was much less thought out. I simply opened snapchat when I thought something funny had happened, took a photo, wrote a caption and posted it to ‘my story’. Unlike Instagram, I took the image and therefore I am both the author and distributor.

So, when my friend showed me how she makes kombucha from home I thought it was hilarious and had to document it and distribute it to my friends. I only have my close friends on snapchat, so I find it a great platform for sharing random bits and bobs to a small pool of people who will appreciate it.

This will not be published anywhere else. The 24 hrs longevity of snapchat posts means that when I put things on snapchat it’s usually because I don’t care too much about preserving them. It’s just a quick moment that I’d like to share.

Friday: Google it

On Friday I went to uni and my internship, so most of my day was spent doing work.

These are the forms of online media I used:

  • TramTracker & PTV apps
  • WordPress
  • Used Google docs
  • Went on website of client to get content
  • Read & wrote emails on gmail
  • Listened to Spotify
  • Checked LinkedIn – accepted request
  • iMessage & Whatsapp

Google 

I spent a lot of time online at my internship. I was working on a collaborative project with a co-worker so we decided to use a google doc to easily combine our work.

To do this I signed in to my personal google account, opened my google drive, opened a new google doc and shared it with my co-worker through her email account. In the google doc, we worked on a bio for the owner of the company we work at, a bio for our workplace (Australian Style Institute) and a write up for an event we were working on. This was all content written to be published on a website that provided people information about this event.

Once we had finished, we also shared google doc with our boss so she could read it and make sure it was ready to use. Then, she saved the document as a file and sent it to the company we were working with so they could publish it to their website. She sent it via gmail. This meant that I (with help) authored the work, however someone else distributed and published it.

We used google docs because it was easy to work on collaboratively, especially while we were sitting together and spitting out ideas. If one of us said something, the other would write it down. It makes it much easier for both parties when you can both see and work on a document. It also made it extremely easy to share it with our boss, so she could add anything if needed before we finalised it.

Having a google account is great because you can use the one account for a lot different programs, such as gmail, google drive and calendar.

Thursday: Travel planning

On Thursday, I went to my internship, uni and to a friends place. Throughout the day I used all these forms of online media:

  • TramTracker & PTV apps to see how far away my trams & trains were
  • Listened to music on Spotify
  • Scrolled through Instagram & Facebook
  • Checked & replied to emails on gmail
  • Went on clients website at work
  • Accepted request on LinkedIn
  • Used MYRMIT, Library Search, Google searches to participate in class
  • Texted friends on iMessage and Whatsapp

Most of my media use was when I went to my friends house.
First, I used the maps app on my iPhone 6 to remind myself out how to get there. I put in her address from my house, and followed the route.

I was going there to book accomodation for when we go to Italy together in July. First, we googled ‘best areas to stay in Florence’ and repeated for Rome. We clicked on a few of the sites that google suggested. These were mostly blogs and they provided insight into the where the best areas to stay when travelling were. We did this so we could then progress to finding accomodation, as it helps to search specific areas on most accomodation sites.

For all places we wanted to stay, we looked up AirBnb, Hostel World & Booking.com. This was so that we could compare costs, proximity to main areas we want to see and functionality of places.

The search process was similar for all three sites. AirBnb is for privately listed houses, appartments, rooms, etc. We put in in the location, dates, number of guests and price range to limit our search. We could also move the map to zone in on a certain area. Once we found some places that fit our criteria, we looked at reviews, scrolled through the photos provided and read the description. We found a place that would work for us in Florence and were able to book it straight away. My friend booked this one, and sent a request to me so I could add it to ‘my trip’, which is a seperate section on your own AirBnb account. I had to use my ANZ ‘GoMoney AU’ app to transfer her money to pay for my half of the accomodation price.

Hostel World is specifically for finding hostels. On the home page, you type in the area you’re looking at, dates you wish to stay and number of guests. You are able to filter the price, type of room, facilities, rating, type of building and payment. For some reason, we left these blank and did a regular search. We eventually found a place we liked and booked. I had to put in details, such as name, age and email address of all the people we were going with. Then, I put through my credit card details to pay for it. I also forwarded the booking confirmation email to my friends.

Whilst we looked at accomodation on Booking.com , the site is less easier to use than AirBnb and HostelWorld. The process of finding the right accomodation was much quicker on the other sites, therefore we didn’t book anything through booking.com. It also came across a lot less trustworthy due to the cluttered, colourful look of the site.
